Probabilistic rainfall thresholds for shallow landslides initiation – A case study from The Nilgiris district, Western Ghats, India

Abstract summary

This study estimates rainfall thresholds and the temporal probability of shallow landslide occurrence in landslide-prone parts of The Nilgiris District in the Western Ghats of India. A historical landslide inventory covering 1824–2018, detailed analysis of the 2009 landslides, and rainfall records from 37 rain-gauge stations were used to identify locations where rainfall-triggered failures are especially likely. Thresholds were estimated for 14 locations, while temporal probabilities were calculated for several return periods. The results provide a scientific basis for developing rainfall-based landslide early-warning systems in the region.

Private security preparedness for disasters caused by natural and anthropogenic hazards

Abstract summary

This study assesses the preparedness of private-security personnel in Serbia for disasters caused by natural and anthropogenic hazards and examines whether preparedness varies according to demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. An anonymous four-point Likert-scale survey was conducted from April to June 2019 with 178 private-security members attending professional courses in Belgrade. The questionnaire covered responsibility, organizational preparedness, knowledge of response procedures, and perceptions of first-responder effectiveness. Multivariate regression results indicated that variables such as gender, age, education, and marital status did not significantly predict the preparedness subscale.
