The research examines the perceived impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on sustainable island living and explores how demographic characteristics are associated with five key dimensions of sustainability:

💼 Socio-economic factors

🏛️ Institutional and policy context
🤝 Community participation and awareness
Using a descriptive-correlational research design, the study collected quantitative data from 365 respondents across the six municipalities of Marinduque Island in the Philippines.
The findings indicate that demographic characteristics—including age, sex, occupation, income, and access to technology—are significantly associated with different dimensions of island sustainability. Age was negatively associated with environmental and technological factors, suggesting lower engagement among older residents, while occupation and income were positively associated with socio-economic conditions and community participation.
Importantly, access to technology showed a significant positive association with the institutional and policy context, highlighting the importance of digital connectivity in strengthening governance and supporting sustainable development. Overall, the results demonstrate that demographic factors have a measurable association with sustainable behaviour, community participation, and perceptions of AI-enabled sustainability.
🌍 The study contributes to the growing international discussion on how AI and digital technologies can support more sustainable, connected, resilient, and inclusive island communities, particularly in geographically isolated and resource-constrained environments.
