Determinants of Residents' Participation in Disaster Risk Management in Lagos Metropolis Nigeria
This study examines the determinants of residents’ participation in disaster risk management in Lagos Metropolis, Nigeria. Using a stratified sampling design covering island and mainland areas and a household questionnaire survey, it identifies differences in socioeconomic characteristics, disaster awareness, and training. Although many residents were aware of disaster risk management, relatively few had received formal training. Age, educational status, length of residence, and income were associated with participation, with age, education, and length of stay emerging as important predictors. The authors recommend stronger public awareness, training, institutional capacity, funding, and equipment for disaster-risk-management agencies.
The Role of Al-Shifa Medical Complex Administration in Evacuation & Sheltering Planning
This study analyzes the role of Al-Shifa Medical Complex administration in evacuation and sheltering planning in the Gaza Strip. Using content analysis, field observations, stakeholder interviews, and risk analysis, it assesses preparedness for emergencies and the implementation of evacuation mechanisms. The findings indicate that rapid response is critical for saving lives and that Al-Shifa maintains a comprehensive evacuation plan that is updated regularly. However, the study identifies gaps in full-scale drills and staff preparedness. It recommends a permanent internal emergency committee, realistic evacuation and sheltering exercises, and stronger staff capacity in emergency and crisis management.
Water crisis and adaptation strategies by tribal community: A case study in Baghaichari Upazila of Rangamati District in Bangladesh
This study investigates water scarcity and traditional adaptation practices among tribal communities in Baghaichari Upazila of Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts. Face-to-face interviews across six villages show that households depend on rivers, streams, springs, wells, ponds, and traditional small dams for drinking, domestic use, and irrigation. Water scarcity is most severe from December to April, and many residents travel considerable distances to collect water. Deforestation is widely perceived as a major cause of worsening scarcity. The authors recommend strengthening local adaptive capacity and incorporating traditional practices into government and non-governmental water-management policies.
Indicator based assessment of integrated flood vulnerability index for Brunei Darussalam
This study develops an integrated indicator-based flood-vulnerability assessment for Brunei Darussalam. Hydrological, environmental, social, and economic indicators are combined to evaluate vulnerability across different districts and visualize the results spatially. The framework is designed to identify areas requiring greater attention and resource allocation and to support disaster-risk reduction, flood planning, and vulnerability reduction. The study demonstrates how multidimensional indicators can be translated into a country-level flood-vulnerability map to inform more targeted disaster-management strategies.
Innovative solutions for flood risk management
This review identifies, evaluates, and prioritizes innovative solutions with potential value for flood-risk-management practitioners. Using the DAREnet knowledge base and a structured literature-selection procedure, the authors analyze more than 100 relevant studies addressing critical flood-management challenges and sources of innovation. The review highlights significant untapped potential in prevention, preparedness, civil protection, communication, cooperation, technology, and related practice areas. The findings are intended to support practitioners in identifying useful innovations and contribute to a broader evidence base for modern flood-risk management.
