Volume 4, No. 2 (2022) presents six peer-reviewed contributions addressing school disaster-risk-reduction implementation, humanitarian coordination for internally displaced people, domestic fuel energy and environmental risk, household flood vulnerability, seismic vulnerability of existing buildings, and community resilience to natural disasters in coastal Bangladesh.
The issue combines educational, humanitarian, environmental, socioeconomic, engineering, geospatial, and community-resilience perspectives, reflecting IJDRM’s interdisciplinary focus on prevention, preparedness, response, recovery, vulnerability reduction, and disaster resilience.

Disaster Risk Reduction Management Implementation in the Public Elementary Schools of the Department of Education, Philippines

Abstract summary

This study evaluates implementation of Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM) in public elementary schools in the Alfonso Lista District, Schools Division of Ifugao, Philippines. Thirty-six school heads and DRRM coordinators were surveyed using instruments based on the DepEd-DRRM Manual. The findings indicate strong implementation of safe learning facilities, school-based DRRM structures, and integration of DRRM into the curriculum. Preparedness of facilities was rated highly, while disaster-preparedness activities were still developing. DRRM implementation was significantly associated with preparedness, awareness, and understanding among school personnel.

This study examines coordination between humanitarian and governmental organizations in the Gaza Strip and its effect on assistance to internally displaced people following the May 2021 escalation. Using a descriptive-analytical approach and stakeholder interviews, the study finds that coordination is essential to the efficiency of humanitarian interventions and that cooperation among governmental, non-governmental, and humanitarian actors was substantial, reaching an estimated 80 percent. The authors nevertheless identify room for improvement and recommend faster emergency response, better use of available resources, stronger IDP coordination mechanisms, and deeper collaboration among relevant institutions.

This study investigates relationships among poverty, domestic fuel-energy use, charcoal and fuel-wood production, and loss of vegetal cover in Nigeria. Secondary data together with remote-sensing and GIS techniques are used to analyze trends, particularly in the western region of the country. The findings indicate a positive relationship between poverty, reliance on fuel wood and charcoal, and vegetation loss. The authors argue that disaster-risk-reduction initiatives should therefore be closely integrated with poverty-reduction strategies and sustainable energy and land-management policies.

This mixed-method study investigates why households continue to live in flood-prone parts of the Lower Kano Plains in Kisumu County, Kenya, and examines the effects and vulnerabilities associated with recurrent flooding. Research in Nyando, Miwani, and Lower Nyakach used household surveys, key-informant interviews, focus groups, and document review. The findings show that income, household size, culture, housing conditions, and other socioeconomic factors strongly shape residential choices and flood vulnerability. Losses of houses, property, and farmland were among the most serious reported impacts.

Resilience to natural disasters: A case study on southwestern region of coastal Bangladesh

This study assesses disaster resilience in Kazirchar village, Muladi Upazila, Barishal District, in coastal Bangladesh. A literature review, structured questionnaire survey, and focus-group discussions are used to evaluate socioeconomic, institutional, and physical resilience. Indicators relating to literacy, health care, food consumption, income, training, public awareness, coordination, electricity, warning systems, water bodies, and housing reveal generally low resilience. The authors conclude that weak socioeconomic, institutional, and physical capacities constrain overall community resilience and identify priorities for strengthening disaster risk reduction in coastal Bangladesh.
